San José, Costa Rica — La Sabana Metropolitan Park, long considered the urban lungs of San José, is undergoing a targeted physical infrastructure enhancement aimed at diversifying recreational and high-performance athletic usage. The initiative, officially named Circuitos del Corazón, will add 3,214 meters of specialized tracks designed to accommodate varied levels of physical activity. Construction on the initial phase is already under way, with complete delivery slated for December 2026.
The project stands out as a unique private-public community reinvestment mechanism. Driven directly by the organizers of the Gran Maratón Costa Rica, the enterprise operates under a structural model where 100 percent of marathon ticket sales are channeled back into civic infrastructure. Rather than operating purely as a commercial athletic competition, the event uses runner registration revenues to construct permanent public assets for the capital.

To address the contrasting demands of casual park visitors and serious endurance athletes, the development divides the 3,214 total meters into three distinct, specialized tracks. A dedicated walking circuit spans 826 meters for visitors seeking low-impact exercise at their own pace. A secondary recreational circuit stretches 1,188 meters tailored for casual joggers, while a third 1,200-meter athletic circuit is engineered specifically for high-intensity training and structured workouts.
Material selection for the circuits highlights modern urban engineering practices aimed at sustainability and practical navigation. Industrial materials supplier Cementos Progreso is providing specialized pigmented permeable concrete for the track surfaces. This structural concrete allows rainwater to filter directly into the underlying soil, mitigating surface runoff and flooding risk in the park during intense rainfall events while utilizing permanent color coding to visually differentiate each circuit type.
Organization leaders emphasize that translating event participation into permanent physical infrastructure redefines the traditional sports business model in Central America.
We have always wanted the Gran Maratón Costa Rica to mean more than just running a distance and crossing a finish line. The Circuitos del Corazón were born from that conviction: to transform the effort of thousands of people into a space that the entire country can enjoy. We are excited to see how an initiative that began as a vision starts taking shape in La Sabana and will accompany people long after the race ends.
Leonora Jiménez, General Producer of Gran Maratón Costa Rica
Strategic corporate and institutional alignment has accelerated the execution timeline. Key institutional entities including the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER) and the Social Protection Board (JPS) have paired with private sector entities to facilitate urban permits, civil engineering oversight, and long-term capital backing. Financial institution Banco Promerica Costa Rica serves as a core banking sponsor for the project.
Bank executives highlighted the societal dividends generated when corporate event sponsorships extend directly into sustainable public infrastructure projects.
We are thrilled to celebrate the start of the Circuitos del Corazón, which is the result of the social impact of the Gran Maratón Costa Rica 2026, where we serve as a sponsoring bank. This initiative aligns with our purpose of encouraging people to achieve success.
Marianne Hütt, Marketing Director of Banco Promerica Costa Rica
On-site work is currently managed by civil construction firm TRAESA, which has deployed heavy crews to prepare terrain, establish precise grade lines, set formwork, and apply the specialized concrete layers. The construction phase is designed to integrate cleanly into the park’s broader structural modernization plan, ensuring minimal interruption to current visitors while building durable capital assets.
Construction leadership highlighted the technical responsibility inherent in executing high-use public works in Costa Rica’s primary capital park.
This represents the first heartbeat of a major project: for Constructora TRAESA, being the main ally of the work means assuming the commitment to bring the Circuitos del Corazón to life with the solidity of those who build trust in every project we undertake. We continue with the construction process, transforming and improving spaces for the well-being and quality of life of users, always committed to the country’s development.
Erick Moya, Public Bidding Manager at TRAESA
Beyond immediate fitness benefits, the naming and geometry of the tracks carry symbolic resonance tied to the marathon’s primary race route, La Ruta del Corazón. That route traces a heart-shaped silhouette when viewed from above across San José, Tibás, Goicoechea, and Montes de Oca. By institutionalizing these new surfaces within La Sabana, project developers are cementing a permanent link between civic sports events and public health infrastructure in the capital.
