Costa Rican Engineering Students Launch Autonomous Rover into the Nevada Desert

San José, Costa Rica — Eight engineering students from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) are taking their talents to the international stage, competing in the prestigious A Rocket Launch for International Student Satellite (ARLISS) event in Nevada, USA. This high-profile aerospace competition challenges students to design, build, and deploy miniature space systems under demanding real-world conditions, providing a crucial launchpad for future technological breakthroughs.

The Costa Rican team, named Jade, is showcasing “Proyecto Lázaro” (Project Lazarus), an autonomous two-wheeled rover designed to survive a high-altitude rocket launch and navigate the harsh, unpredictable terrain of the Black Rock Desert. This year’s competition, which commenced on September 14, features over 15 elite teams from various global universities, marking a major milestone for Central American technology and engineering prowess on an international level.

Founded in 1999, ARLISS is a collaborative effort between Stanford University, academic institutions worldwide, and the Association of Experimental Rocketry of the Pacific (AeroPAC). Over the last two decades, it has served as a critical testing ground for future aerospace engineers, pushing the boundaries of student-led space research, planetary exploration simulations, and robust mechatronic designs.

For our team, it is a great honor to represent UCR and Costa Rica in this competition. ARLISS allows us to showcase the innovative work developed at the University of Costa Rica and the Aerospace Engineering Group (GIA). Furthermore, we believe participating in these spaces helps highlight the potential that exists in our country to develop projects of international scope.

The Jade team is led by Sofía Múnera alongside Jiménez, both of whom are mechanical engineering students. They are joined by a multidisciplinary roster including Juan Esteban Giraldo Echeverry, Yosdeny Faubricio López Trejos, Andy Emmanuel Cruz Hernández, Isaac Bustamante Mora, Kiara Lynsue Rosales Monge, and Jake Guevara Chavarría. Together, they represent the UCR departments of Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering, proving the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration in complex system design.

The development of Lázaro required eight months of rigorous engineering work, combining advanced structural analysis and software integration. The rover features a robust two-wheeled design constructed using high-grade aluminum and custom 3D-printed components. The vehicle’s brain is powered by a custom-designed printed circuit board (PCB) programmed to execute complex telemetry and autonomous navigation algorithms under extreme physical stress.

During the final trial, the rover is loaded into a high-powered rocket, launched thousands of feet into the sky, and released. Upon descending into the desert, the vehicle must navigate autonomously to a predefined target, transport a small flag to the finish line, and plant it so it remains standing for at least one consecutive minute. Achieving this requires flawless execution across five distinct phases: launch, deployment, landing, autonomous navigation, and the completion of the target mission.

The most innovative aspect of our proposal does not lie in a single component or mechanism, but rather in the integrated way we developed Lázaro. On the mechanical side, the structure features high-resistance elements designed to absorb the landing impact after being ejected from a high-speed rocket. Additionally, it integrates a robust electronic system that guarantees constant communication with the ground base.

This international experience provides the UCR delegation with an invaluable benchmark to measure their progress against top-tier global institutions. By testing their hardware in the unforgiving environment of the Black Rock Desert, these Costa Rican students are not just completing an academic exercise; they are actively proving that Central American engineering can meet the rigorous demands of the global aerospace industry.
